The Secret to a Tidy House – My Top 5 Tips

5 simple tasks that will instantly make your home look tidy and organised.

Keeping your house tidy can often seem like a losing battle with our busy schedules and if kids are involved.  Often, we can feel completely overwhelmed with the never-ending list of household chores that we simply don’t know how to keep on track.  The result is often the house looking like a dump site which adds to our stress and leaves us in fear of someone popping over unannounced!    However, if you follow my 5 simple tasks each day your home will instantly look tidier, your mood will lift, and your space will flow.

1. Make your Bed

Make your Bed

This is one of the first things I do every morning and I literally can’t start the day right unless it’s done.  For me it represents transitioning into a new day and a new beginning as corny as that might sound!  Making the bed also instantly makes your room look tidy even if you have some clutter on your bedside table or a few clothes laying around.  Invest in a nice throw blanket and some pretty cushions for that extra wow factor.

2. Do the Dishes

Do the Dishes

Do not fall into the trap of leaving dirty cups and mugs around the house, this is an immediate eyesore and will make your whole space look untidy.  Make sure after mealtimes everyone knows to take their dishes to the kitchen.  Ideally, you’d want them in the dishwasher, hand washed or at the very least put in the sink.  Even my kids know to take their plate to the kitchen after breakfast or dinner which is no small feat!  A key tip is to have all your dishes done the night before.  Not only does this save precious time in the morning but waking up to a sink full of dirty dishes is not a great way to start the day or have a tidy house. 3. Keep your Cushions Tidy

Tidy Cushions

Oh, how I love a good cushion! They’re such a cost-effective way to update a space and add a touch of texture and luxury to your home.  Obviously, they get moved around a bit with people sitting on the lounge or laying in bed.  The trick is to position them nicely at key times of the day like just before bed or before you leave in the morning.  This simple task only takes a few seconds but will definitely make your lounge room look organised and tidy.

4. Invest in Shoe Cupboard or Rack

Shoe Rack

Having people take their shoes off before they enter your home is wonderful for keeping your floors in good shape. However, nothing looks worse than an unsightly pile of shoes outside someone’s front door or in their hallway.  Having a shoe cupboard or rack will not only look tidier it will be much easier for people to find their shoes in a central location.

5. Keep your Dining Table Clear of Junk

Dining Table

It’s so tempting for your dining table to become a bit of a dumping ground for washing that needs folding, laptops, bags etc.  I know during home-schooling it was our makeshift classroom, but I always made sure I packed away the school items at the end of the day.  Dining tables are generally a large space, so the eye is naturally drawn to them.  So instead of a dumping ground try having a nice table runner, placemats, and a centre piece like a floral arrangement instead.  It will make the world of difference to the appeal and general tidiness of your home.
